A Love That Would Not Let Go: Alaa and Mava’s Quiet Fight for Each Other

The night was cold, and the lights outside the supermarket flickered against wet pavement. Cars rushed by. Shoppers hurried past. But in a dark corner near the wall, a small, broken family remained still.

A thin mother dog sat curled around her only puppy.

She had not moved for three days.

Not when the wind cut through the concrete corridor.
Not when hunger twisted her stomach.
Not when people stepped around her as if she were invisible.

She stayed because her baby was there.

A mother who refused to leave

When two young women finally noticed the faint crying, they stopped. The mother slowly lifted her head. Her eyes were tired, sunken, but gentle. In that look was fear… and hope… and something deeper.

They offered her food.

She took the smallest bite.

Then she nudged the rest toward her puppy.

That single motion told them everything they needed to know.

They carefully lifted both of them. The mother did not resist. Instead, she leaned into their arms, finally allowing herself to rest. The puppy’s tiny belly was swollen and tight, and she whimpered when touched. She was barely weeks old.

They named the mother Alaa.
They named the baby Mava..

The truth at the clinic

At the veterinary clinic, their condition was heartbreaking.

Both were suffering from Ehrlichia, a dangerous tick-borne disease.
Both were severely anemic.
Their skin was raw from mange, scratched until it bled.
Alaa’s ears and tail were covered in wounds.

And there was only one puppy.

The vet looked at Alaa gently.
“She has been pregnant many times. This was not her only baby.”

No one knew what had happened to the others.

But Mava was all she had left.

The hardest separation

Treatment had to begin immediately.

But to save Mava, the doctors had to take her away for intensive care.

When they carried Mava into another room, Alaa let out a soft, broken cry.

For seven days, Alaa waited.

She walked in circles.
She sniffed every doorway.
Every time someone passed, she looked up as if asking, Is she safe?

Her body was healing — but her heart was still holding on.

The moment everything changed

Seven days later, Mava was brought back.

At first, Alaa didn’t recognize the scent beneath the medicine.

Then Mava let out a tiny squeak.

Alaa rushed forward, sniffing her baby again and again, licking her face, her ears, her paws — making sure she was real. Mava wagged her tiny tail and pressed into her mother’s chest.

The room went quiet.

Love had reunited them.

From that moment, everyone knew they could never be separated again.

Healing together

Weeks passed, and both of them began to change.

Alaa’s wounds closed.
Her fur softened.
Her eyes no longer carried fear.

Mava’s swollen belly shrank as the parasites left her body.
Her fur became silky.
She even tried licking her own medicine, forcing us to gently protect her with a tiny cone.

Through it all, Alaa stayed close — watching, guarding, loving.

A decision from the heart

People called to adopt Mava.

She was small.
Healthy.
Adorable.

But when they learned she came with her mother, they hesitated.

“No, we only want the puppy.”

Every time, Alaa lay beside her baby, her eyes full of quiet devotion.

Mava wasn’t just a puppy.

She was the reason Alaa survived.

So we made a choice.

If no one would take them together…
Then they would stay together.

A new life, still side by side

Today, Alaa runs freely.
Mava plays with puppy joy.

They nap curled into each other, as if the world might try to pull them apart again. And every time I see them, I remember that first night — a starving mother taking one bite of food… and giving the rest to her child.

Love doesn’t always shout.

Sometimes it whispers.

And sometimes it saves lives.
