Hunger is painful.
But imagine being hungry while food sits right in front of you — and your body refuses to keep it.
That was Rico’s life.
When rescuers first spotted him wandering near a shelter on Pozharsky Street, it was hard to believe he was still alive. His body looked impossibly thin, like a fragile frame made of bones and skin.
Every rib showed.
His spine pressed sharply against his skin.
Even the angles of his hips looked painfully sharp.
He moved slowly, weak and trembling, searching for food like any starving dog would.
But Rico’s story carried a cruel twist.
Finding food wasn’t the problem.
Keeping it down was.
A Body That Couldn’t Hold Onto Food
The rescue team rushed Rico to the veterinary clinic as quickly as possible.
He was freezing, exhausted, and dangerously underweight.
At first, the team thought the problem was simple starvation. But when they tried feeding him, something unexpected happened.
Moments after eating, everything came back up.
Food.
Water.
Nothing stayed in his body long enough to nourish him.
The veterinarians soon discovered the reason.
Rico’s esophagus wasn’t working properly.
In healthy dogs, muscles push food down from the mouth to the stomach. But Rico’s esophagus had lost that ability. Instead of moving downward, the food would remain stuck and eventually come back up.
His body was starving… even when he tried to eat.
He had already lost more than 10 kilograms (22 pounds) — an alarming amount of weight for a dog his size.
Without immediate help, he simply wouldn’t survive.

Fighting Gravity Just to Eat
Saving Rico required an unusual solution.
Instead of feeding him normally, the team had to work with gravity.
Each time Rico ate, volunteers gently held him upright in a vertical position — almost like a baby sitting up after feeding.
They kept him that way for 20 to 30 minutes after every meal, hoping gravity would guide the food down into his stomach.
It was slow, exhausting work.
Sometimes even water wouldn’t stay down. Because of this, Rico also needed IV fluids to prevent dehydration.
Meanwhile, his fragile body struggled to stay warm.
With almost no body fat left, he shivered constantly. The clinic wrapped him in blankets, trying to keep him comfortable as he fought to regain strength.
A Difficult Decision Ahead
Even with careful feeding, the medical team knew Rico’s condition was extremely serious.
If he couldn’t gain weight soon, another option might be necessary.
Doctors began discussing a procedure called gastrostomy, where a feeding tube is placed directly into the stomach. This would allow nutrients to bypass the damaged esophagus entirely.
It would be a long and demanding treatment.
But it could also be the chance Rico needed.

A Dog Who Refuses to Give Up
Despite everything his body has endured, Rico continues to fight.
During quiet moments at the clinic, he stretches his thin legs and watches the people caring for him with soft, trusting eyes.
He allows them to hold him upright after meals.
He stays calm through IV treatments.
And even in his fragile state, there is still something strong inside him — a quiet determination to keep going.
For the first time in a long time, Rico isn’t fighting alone.
A Hope for the Future

Rico’s journey is far from over.
He still needs time, medical care, and careful feeding to regain the weight his body has lost. Tests and possibly surgery may still be ahead.
But the most important thing is this:
He survived long enough to be found.
And now, surrounded by people who refuse to give up on him, Rico finally has something he didn’t have before.
A real chance at life.
