Pickles, The Dog Who Survived Chains, Pain, and a Broken Spine

When we found him, he was almost completely motionless.

A thick chain was wrapped tightly around his neck, digging deep into his skin. His eyes were red and swollen from crying. He looked like a soul that had already given up.

The moment we loosened the chain, panic took over his body. He tried to run, slipped, and fell into a ditch. I grabbed him just in time. On his back was a deep open wound — proof that he had been suffering for a very long time.

Whatever had happened to Pickles… it was far worse than we could imagine.

A body burning with pain

At the clinic, we learned how serious his condition was. Pickles had an extremely high fever and was suffering from seizures. We stayed awake all night while the vets tried to stabilize him.

The scars around his neck told a heartbreaking story.
He had been chained for years.

But that wasn’t what took away his ability to walk.

Both of his back legs were paralyzed because of spinal damage — as if his body had been hit by something hard again and again.

The pain was unbearable. He needed strong medication just to sleep.

But the physical pain was only part of his suffering.

Pickles was emotionally shattered.

The diagnosis that broke our hearts

His condition kept getting worse. He had unexplained fevers. His legs trembled constantly.

An MRI was the last option.

The result made everyone cry.

Pickles had myelomalacia — a fatal condition where the spinal cord slowly dies due to severe trauma. It explained everything: the paralysis, the trembling, the pain.

There was no cure.
No surgery.
No miracle medicine.

All we could do was give him comfort… and love.

Learning to trust again

Pickles couldn’t even urinate on his own. He developed painful sores on his legs from lying still for so long. We reported his case because someone had done this to him.

This was not a stray dog.

This was a dog who had been chained and abused.

And yet, despite everything, Pickles was gentle.
Shy.
Soft.

All he wanted was to be loved.

Every day we cleaned his wounds.
Every day we held him.
Every day we spoke softly to him.

And slowly… something changed.

The sores healed.
The fear in his eyes faded.
He began to relax.

A future that finally belongs to him

Soon, Pickles will leave the hospital.

We may never know who hurt him.
We may never get justice.

But Pickles is no longer living in chains.

He is coming home.

And when he is strong enough, he will get a wheelchair — so he can go wherever his heart wants to go.

Because even when a body is broken…
love can still carry a soul forward.
