In January 2026, relentless rain fell over Hattiesburg.

Streets flooded. Yards disappeared beneath rising water.

But in one backyard, a four-year-old Labrador mix named Maddie had nowhere to run.

She was chained.

A heavy metal chain tethered her to a wooden doghouse — a chain that weighed nearly half as much as she did.

As freezing rain poured down and water crept higher, her newborn puppies struggled in the growing flood. Maddie barked until her voice turned hoarse. She stared at the house, begging for someone to open the door.

When rescuers arrived in South Mississippi, they learned the heartbreaking backstory. Maddie’s original owner had passed away. A relative inherited the property — and saw Maddie as an inconvenience.

The pregnant dog had been put outside.

Chained.

Left to give birth alone.

By the time help arrived, one puppy had already drowned.

Seven remained.

The Seven Little “M&Ms”

Maddie and her seven surviving puppies were rushed to safety.

Stevie lovingly named them the “M&Ms.”

Under a real roof, with dry bedding and warmth, the tiny pups began to thrive.

“Every time she takes a mommy break, she’s in my lap,” Stevie shared. “She’s truly grateful.”
