Specialists diagnosed Phoenix with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)—a rare autoimmune disease in dogs. His own immune system had slowly destroyed the muscles in his face, leaving him with what would become known as his permanent “sharky grin.”
This condition explained everything:
- The loss of facial muscle
- The inability to fully close his eyes
- The severe skin inflammation
- His extreme sensitivity to sunlight
For Phoenix, the sun itself became dangerous. Ultraviolet light triggered painful flare-ups, meaning his future would require constant protection—sunblock, protective clothing, and vigilant care.
