It started with a sound so faint that someone could have easily missed it.

A woman had just returned to her car in a quiet residential parking area when she heard soft whimpering coming from somewhere underneath the vehicle. At first, it sounded like it might be a loose part or something caught below the car.

A puppy was crying.
